Judges include publishing director Alan Mahar, renowned reviewer Pauline Morgan, children's writer Simon Cheshire and award-winning poet Jeff Phelps

The winning book will be read by a top London literary agent

About the Book Award

Books sent to us can be from a publisher or an author published by an independent publisher, or by those who have self published. We do not accept unpublished manuscripts.
We do not currently accept ebooks. However, if you only have an ebook in distribution and would like to enter, we would suggest you get a copy printed by a print on demand company. Just let us know on the entry form that your book is only distributed as an ebook.
We accept fiction (all genres), young adult, children’s, biographies, non-fiction, self-help, cookery, poetry, photography etc. There are no limits on the type.

We have a panel of carefully selected expert readers. When we receive your book we pair up the category of your book with our reader's specialist interest.

Our readers observe a strict criteria when reading each book. They are given Book Score Sheets to complete for every book received. In general terms, the most important aspects for you to keep in mind are: whether a book is well written (including structure and style), and whether a book is well presented (cover, pictures (if relevant) and layout).

Three months after the closing date - 31st March 2012 - the results and overall winner will be announced.

First Prize £800 (approx 1,252 US$, 963€ )
The winning book will also be read by a top literary agent from MBA

2nd prize £150 (approx 240 US $, 180€)

3rd prize £75 (approx 117 US$, 86€)
Please note: the third prize on a leaflet may say £50. This is a misprint.
What is meant by an independent publisher?

This is a common question we are asked.

Usually it is a small publishing house. However, some have expanded and become much larger. So this year, we are saying that "small" is not a requirement.

Here is a link to the definition of an independent publisher. Essentially it is one that is not owned by another company and not one of the Big Six.

How to enter

You should send one copy of each book, receipt of your payment (or cheque (only in sterling)) and the entry form.

Books will be read as they arrive. The competition closes on the 31st March 2012. The winner will be announced approximately three months after it closes. This allows time for the judges to read all the books and to make their final decision.

Entries should be postmarked no later than the 31st March 2012. If you think your book will be delayed in the post please contact us.

The award money will be paid in sterling via a cheque or PayPal.* The winning book will be read by a top literary agent at MBA. They are under no obligation to take the winner on as a client but you are guaranteed that they will consider your work.

Entry Form

Please print out the entry form either from the PDF, Word file or from your web browser by clicking here. Once filled out please send it along with your submission and receipt of payment.

Please note that submissions should be sent via your country's usual postal service and not a courier service. For example, in the UK this should be Royal Mail; in the USA this would be the American Postal Service. If this is a problem please email us.

Send your entry to:

The Rubery Book Award
PO Box 15821
Birmingham
B31 9EA
UK.

Multiple submissions from publishers or entrants entering more than one book should be accompanied by the Multiple Submission form below.

Terms and conditions

This is an international competition and we accept submissions from anyone in the world provided all submissions are in English.

Each entrant will submit one copy of their book.

Each entrant will fill out the entry form and send with their book.

Books published by independent presses and self published books are eligible to enter.

Entry fees will be paid either by PayPal or cheque. If paid by PayPal, your email confirmation should be printed out and sent with your book.

You may enter the competition as many times as you wish so long as each submission is accompanied with the relevant submission fee.

Your entry must be your own original work.

There is no publication date requirement but books should not be out of print.

All entries must be in book form. If you have an ebook in distribution that you would like to enter please get a hard copy printed (in book form not as a manuscript).
Unpublished manuscripts are not accepted and will not be returned.

Entries cannot be returned.

The Rubery Book Award holds no responsibility for incomplete or ineligible entries.

Anybody associated with the Rubery Book Award and employees is not eligible to enter. This year this includes any book published by Tindal Street Press.

Entries containing unacceptable (in Rubery Book Award’s opinion), indecent, defamatory, or discriminatory language, pornographic or other unlawful content shall not be considered.

The winners will be notified via email.

All prizes will be paid in sterling either by Cheque or PayPal. The Rubery Book Award cannot be held responsible for any fees levied by PayPal or fees associated with currency conversions.

The judge’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

By entering this competition each entrant agrees to be bound by these terms and conditions.

Sunpenny Short Story Competition
This competition is for short stories of all kinds accepted in the Rules below. We believe firmly in competitions as a way to encourage writers (a) to put pen to paper, and (b) to believe in themselves. Practice of your profession is essential, and this is one way to get people writing with purpose. Many people also love the challenge, and it drives them to produce material they might not otherwise have explored, developing them in unexpected ways!

PRIZES: First prize £150 second prize £75. Third prize is two of our books. Winning and Commended entries will be included in an Anthology. Note that if there are enough entries, prizes may rise in value. If there are too few, prizes will be adjusted fairly according to entry fees received.

DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES: 31 March 2012. Winners will be announced by the end of May 2012.

ENTRY FEE: £4.00 / US$8.00 / ZAR40.00 (special allowance for Africa) per entry. This can be paid either online (see bottom of page), by cheque/check, or by deposit into one of our bank accounts (USA, South Africa, UK) - email us for details.

Fees are NOT refundable - please ensure you read the rules carefully. If you are paying online below, this will automatically be charged at £4.00 - so if you are in Southern Africa, it will be more than we are asking Southern African entrants; we suggest that you email us for our SA bank details, and make a direct deposit - see details at bottom of page.

CRITIQUES: If you require a professional critique, please make a separate payment for this. Short story critiques are charged at £18.00 (this is roughly just £6/hr).

GUIDELINES:

This competition is OPEN to anyone, of all ages and levels of experience. We are also running a "Christian Writers" competition. For children aged up to (and including) 14, please see our "Young Writers" competition page.
Please DO NOT enter stories written for children. They cannot be judged equally against stories written for adults. We do not yet run a competition for children's stories.
Please be sure you have the rights to enter this competition; entrants take full responsibility for copyright issues. Plagiarism will not be tolerated.
Stories may be up to but no longer than 4,000 words, in any style and on any subject (except those outlined in the Rules below). Please do not be offensive in your stories, or use graphic sexual or violent detail or language.
Please submit by EMAIL, if at all possible. If email is absolutely impossible, then hard (paper) copy submissions will be accepted, but as these have to be scanned into our system, which is very time consuming, we discourage this.
Mark entries clearly with the competition title " Sunpenny OPEN Competition" , and submit as below.
If you really can only submit hard copy, PLEASE: do not staple your work. Staples have to be removed for scanning and our fingers and our time both suffer.
We acknowledge receipt, and notify winners, by email, so please include an email address. If you do not have an email address yourself, please give us the email of a friend or relative through whom you can be contacted. If entering by post, we can only let you know your entry has been received if you include a stamped self-addressed postcard or envelope to be sent back to you.
Paper entries can not be returned, as they have ID numbers put onto every page, and are then scanned for transfer to the judges. They are in no condition to be used again.
Digital entries: We accept most file formats - MS Word, OfficeOrg, Wordperfect, RTF, PDF, text, and others. If you send us something we can't read, we'll contact you. Please scan for viruses BEFORE sending!

HOW TO FORMAT YOUR ENTRIES:

Please supply a separate cover page with Title, Entrant Name, Address, Email, and the entry's Word Count.
Each page of the story must have page number and title of the story ONLY. Do not include your name or any other identifier on any page of the entry itself. (All entries are given an ID reference number and separated from the cover page to ensure fair judging.)
Entries must be typed on one side of the paper only, and neatly set out as you would a book manuscript (indented paragraphs without blank lines between them; single spaced). We cannot accept hand-written entries.
Please, no fancy fonts! We like good old 12-point Times New Roman, or a similar serif font. We don't like sans-serif fonts like Arial; they are harder on the eyes.
As a guideline, we like a good inch of margin on both sides as well as top and bottom. We now prefer single spacing.
Please check and polish work carefully; if your entry is too liberally sprinkled with poor grammar and spelling, and careless typos, it will be marked down in the final judging. Writing is a language craft, and an artist must (a) know their craft and (b) take pride in their work. If you don't care, we won't be inclined to, either! (Exceptions are made for dyslexic or otherwise handicapped entrants; please make a note on your entry if this is the case.)

COMPETITION RULES:

Entry submission indicates acceptance of all rules, guidelines, terms and conditions.
Stories may be anything up to but no longer than 4,000 words, in any style and on any subject. However, they must not promote racism, gratuitous sex or violence, foul language, or anything else that does not conform to good family and moral values (and we get to decide!).
The competition is open to anyone worldwide provided that the fee is received in either British Pounds, Euros, US Dollars or South African Rands.
The competition closes on 31 March 2012, and winners will be announced and displayed on our web site by end of May 2012.
Prize winners will be notified by email as well as named on the web site; please ensure you supply a valid email address with your entry, even if sent in by post, unless you do not have one - in which case, please state this on your entry title page. Please also check the web site at the beginning of June, in case you don't receive an email for any reason.
Prizes will be paid via PayPal, UK £ cheque/check, deposit into your bank where possible, or any other reasonable, cost-effective method mutually agreed.
Prizes must be claimed within 30 days of being published on the web site and contacted by email. After 30 days, prizes will be forfeited.
All entries must be written in English. Other languages will not be accepted.
You may enter as many different works as you like, as long as each is accompanied by an entry fee.
Entries must be in entirety the original work of the entrant, and the entrant must fully own all necessary rights to enter this competition.
Writers retain copyright, but give permission for their work to be published on this website at our discretion, and in any one future anthology produced by Sunpenny Limited or its imprints.
The judges' decision is final; no individual correspondence or disputes will be entered into.
In extremis, deadlines and any other dates may be changed by Sunpenny Limited without notice for any legitimate reason. Likewise in extremis prizes may be adjusted, but our reasons will be good should either of these necessities arise! In the event that we simply don't receive a reasonable number of entries, we reserve the right to cancel the competition and return entry fees.
We reserve the right to adjust these rules without notice.
Entrants are responsible for completing the submission process effectively. We cannot take responsibility for entries lost in the post or in cyberspace. If you encounter problems, please let us know timeously.

Please ensure that you have read all the rules and guidelines above before entering! Submitting your entry indicates full acceptance of these rules no refunds will be given.

Competition Rules

The competition is open to both published and unpublished authors writing in any genre, including children's fiction. Stories must not have been previously published elsewhere either in print or online.
Authors must be sixteen years of age or older.
Stories should be a maximum of 3,000 words in length, but there is no lower limit.
The entry fee for each story is £5.00 GBP. There is no limit on the number of entries any one person may enter but no author may win more than one prize in any competition. Multiple entries may be made on one entry form with all stories listed.
Each entry must be accompanied by an entry form (which can be copied from our website, or obtained from our contact address: please enclose a SAE) or the Online Entry Form.
The Judges wish to make an unbiased decision on all entries, so please ensure that only the story title is printed on the story itself. This includes NOT having an author contact detail cover sheet. Any entries which do not comply with this rule will be disregarded from the competition.
The closing date for the current competition is: 31st March.
The winners will be announced in April, with the winning stories being published on the Meridian Writing website.

Entry Details

If you would like confirmation that your postal entry has been received, or the list of winners, please enclose a suitable SAE (either marked 'Received' or 'Winners'). Online entries will receive a confirmation email once we have determined the correct fee has been received.
Your story should be clearly typed or printed in English (12pt, Times New Roman preferred) on one side only A4 paper, a word count included and double spaced. Include a 'header' which contains your story title and page number. Online entries will be accepted as an attachment saved as a .doc (or equivalent) file and mailed to our email Entry Address. Please ensure stories are emailed at the same time as the online form is submitted to avoid confusion.
No 'cloud-based' entires will be accepted. Any stories sent via this method will de disqualified.
If someone else is paying for you via PayPal, please enter a note to this effect to avoid any confusion.
Please refer to the 'Contact Us' page to see details on how to pay the entry fee.
No refund will be given for any story which is either invalid or withdrawn by the author, so please make sure that the story you send is the story you want judged.
No stories will be returned, so make sure you keep a copy of your story.
The winning and runner-up stories will be published on the Meridian Writing website.
The Judges' decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into.
Winning authors will be required to supply a short (50 - 100 word) bio which will be published alongside their story.
Copyright remains with the author, but Meridian Writing has the unrestricted right to publish winning stories online. Additional publishing of any stories will be made with the consultation and agreement of the author.

Writers' Village Best Writing award
How to submit your entries for the Writers’ Village Best Writing Award spring 2012

1. Prizes total £550 ($900).

The prizes are: First Prize £400 ($660); Second Prize £100 ($160); Third Prize £50 ($80). Five further shortlisted entrants will gain a FREE entry for their story in the next round. Prize monies will be paid via PayPal (if entry was paid for by PayPal), or by a cheque payable in sterling pounds if entry was paid for by cheque.

The top three winners will be entitled to accredit themselves: ‘Winner, 1st prize [etc], The Writers’ Village Best Writing Award spring 2012, when approaching agents, publishers, editors (etc). Other winners will be entitled to use the phrase: ‘Shortlisted for the Writers’ Village Best Writing Award spring 2012'.

Winning entries will be showcased here on the Writers' Village site.

In the unlikely event that insufficient entries of reasonable quality are received to provide a fair basis for judging, no prizes will be awarded but all entrants will be returned their entry fees.

2. Types of entry accepted & judging criteria

Any form of short story may be submitted up to 3000 words and in any genre (eg. mystery, romance, fantasy, crime, science fiction, children’s, etc).

The work should not have been previously published in print media at the time of its submission to the contest. However, contestants are free to submit their stories to other contests, whether or not the stories win.

Playscripts and poetry may not be entered. (True, the definition of a ‘script’ or ‘prose poem’ may be arguable. But to ensure a level playing field for all entrants, anything that clearly appears to be a script or poem will be excluded and the judge’s definition of the term ‘clearly’ will be final :))

To be fair to new entrants, a story will not be considered for a cash prize if it has previously been entered in the competition or has otherwise received critical feedback from John Yeoman. For the same reason, the same contestant cannot win a cash prize at Writers' Village more than three times.

In judging entries, particular weight will be given to their power to move the reader, their originality and their demonstration of the craft skills of creative writing.

3. Deadline & timings

Entries must be received with payment by midnight (GMT) Saturday 31st March 2012. Winners will be announced by 30th April 2012 on the Writers’ Village website.

4. Presentation format

Prepare your stories exactly as you would for submission to an agent or publisher, with your full contact address plus e-mail and telephone number, included in the same file as the story.

The subsequent text should be in Times Roman or similar (no exotic fonts, please!), 11 or 12-point, double or 1½ spaced. Put your story title and page numbering in the header. (Presentation rules for the professional submission of work can also be found in The Writers’ & Artists’ Year Book, and similar manuals.)

5. How to submit entries

We would greatly prefer stories to be e-mailed as an attachment. Click here to e-mail us. Payment may also be made from this site by PayPal, using the PayPal button below

Important: in the Subject line of your e-mail put ‘Writers’ Village: spring 2012 entry: [your name]’. That way, the system will recognise it as a competition entry rather than spam :)

E-mailed attachments must be in the format: Word.doc, .docx, RTF, txt (plain text) or .odt (Open Office).

Alternatively, hard copy entries can be posted to: Village Guild, The Old School House, Leighton Buzzard, LU7 9DP, UK and a cheque drawn on a UK bank and payable in pounds sterling (GBP) enclosed with the entries. However, if you wish your work to be showcased on the Writers’ Village website, should you win a prize, your entry must additionally be e-mailed as an attachment around the time of entry or enclosed on a CD or floppy with your posted entry.

Entries will be accepted from anywhere in the world, provided that they are in the English language and that payment is received via PayPal or by a cheque in pounds sterling, drawn upon an account held in pounds sterling.

The single best entry that a contestant submits will be selected to go forward for final judging. In this way, every individual will stand an equal chance of winning in the final round.

6. How to pay for your entries

The entry fee is just £10 (approx $16). You may submit as many stories as you wish but each story must be accompanied by a fee of £10 (approx $16), paid either by PayPal or cheque.

Every entrant, winner or not, receives a brief expert critique of their stories.

Pay by PayPal: This is the fastest, easiest way to pay, especially if you want to be sure that your payment is received by the contest deadline. If you are paying your entry fee by PayPal, simply click on the PayPal button below and follow the instructions given. To submit more than two entries, please make each subsequent pair of entries a separate PayPal transaction.

Alternatively, you can send the fee directly from your PayPal account. Our PayPal address is: cwriting [at] btinternet.com (fill in the obvious bit in the middle!).

Or pay by credit card: Clicking on the "Buy Now" button below will also let you pay by credit card if you do not have a PayPal account.

Always be sure to include the note: "Writers’ Village entry spring 2012 [your name and the story titles]" if the form asks you to add 'instructions for merchant'.

Or pay by cheque: If you pay by cheque, it must be made out to 'Village Guild', drawn on a UK bank and payable in pounds sterling (GBP). Enclose with the cheque a note that clearly indicates your name, postal address, e-mail address and telephone number plus the title(s) of the stories you are submitting. Cheques should be posted to: Village Guild, The Old School House, Leighton Buzzard, LU7 9DP, UK.

Note: your submission can be enclosed as hard copy and mailed along with your cheque but if you wish your story to be showcased on the Writers’ Village site, should you win, it must also be sent electronically as an attachment around the time of entry or enclosed with your hard copy on a CD or floppy.

7. Disclaimer & Copyright

By the fact of entering, entrants attest that the work submitted is their own original composition, that they own the copyright, and that the work has not at time of entering been published in print media elsewhere.

Entrants will retain the copyright to their own submitted work and are free to submit it at any time for publication elsewhere, or for entry in other competitions.

Entries will not be returned. While every reasonable precaution will be taken for the safekeeping of entries, neither John Yeoman nor Writers' Village will accept responsibility for the loss or non-arrival of entries. Entrants are strongly advised to keep a copy of all entries.

If you would like confirmation that your entry has been received, either: for e-mailed submissions, tick 'Request read receipt' (under the Tools menu in Outlook Express) when sending your email or, for posted submissions, enclose a stamped addressed postcard.

Queries

Please feel free to e-mail any queries you may have about the contest by clicking here.

A tip: as always, start the Subject line ‘Writers’ Village’ so that your message will be given priority :)

Deadline reminder: entries must be received with payment by midnight (GMT) Sat 31st March 2012.
