Fiction International's Writing Contest
For over 40 years, Fiction International has published writers just like you -- intelligent, far-thinking, politically progressive, and stylistically innovative. We continue the tradition by giving away more than $1,000 in cash and publication in Fiction International to one deserving writer and publication (but not cash) to two others!

* Deadline: June 1, 2011 (extended to August 31). Winners will be announced Fall, 2011.
* Entry fee: $15.
* Theme: BLACKNESS. The meaning of the theme is entirely up to you. Please do not submit any text not related to the theme.

PRIZES:

Grand Prize: $1,000 cash and publication in Fiction International. Two Honorable Mentions: Publication in Fiction International.

RULES:

You may enter as many manuscripts as you like.

We will only accept entries which are fiction, non-fiction, and indeterminant prose. No poetry will be accepted.

Enter online at Submishmash.

Your entry must be original, in English, and not previously published or accepted by any other publisher or producer at the time of submission.

We have set a wordcount limit of 2000 (approximately). Although we won't adhere to a strict word limit, any manuscript that egregiously exceeds the limit of 2000 will be disqualified.

JUDGING & NOTIFICATION:

Every entry will be read and evaluated by the judges. The top 20 entries (finalists) will be read by FI's Editor-in-Chief Harold Jaffe. The First Prize and Honorable Mentions will be selected from among the 20 finalist entries.

QUESTIONS?

Q: Is it okay to have illustration or pictures accompanying my submission?
A: Yes. Providing the artwork is original to you, submission of artwork as part of an entry will be accepted as long as it is part of a text and is not intended to substitute for text.

Q: If there is a word count, how many words am I allowed?
A: Approximately 2000.

Q: Are pen names allowed?
A: Pen names are fine. Write your pen name on all forms etc. so there is no mistakes on credits. Please be advised that we only need your real name if you are chosen as a winner (in order to issue prizes).

Q: What if I am not a U.S. resident?
A: Since we are named Fiction International, we encourage non-U.S. residents. All entry fees are due in U.S. Dollars.

Q: Is there an age limit for entrants?
A: No.

Q: Are there are any other limitations for entrants?
A: There are two limitations: (1) Because FI's editorial staff is also also judging the contest, staff and family members are not allowed to enter. (2) Because the contest is intended to encourage new writers, the contest is limited to writers who have published two books or fewer.

Q: What if I wanted to submit only part of my novel into the competition ( to stay with in the maximum number of words)?
A: If you submit a portion of a novel, please understand that it will be judged as a complete story, not part of another work, so it needs to a complete story in and of itself.

Q: When will winners be notified?
A: Winners will be notified by email in Fall, 2011.

For additional questions, email Editor Harold Jaffe.

PRIVACY PROMISE:

In order to protect your privacy, we will not make our customer list available outside San Diego State University.

BrightonCOW Summer Fiction Competition

Short Story Fiction - up to 3,000 words on any theme.
First Prize: £100.00
Second Prize: £50.00
Third Prize: £25.00

Plus publication on our website, with agreement from each author. Commended entries will also be published on the site. Winners and commended entries will also receive a certificate!

Deadline for entries: Noon on 31st August 2011.

A long-list will be published on this website by 23rd September 2011, and details of the winners and runners-up will be announced by 30th September 2011.

Entry Fee: £4.00 payable by PayPal or cheque. Please make cheques payable to Better Practice Associates Ltd.

You can enter as many times as you wish, paying the £4.00 entry charge each time. Select the "Add to Cart" link below once for each entry, adding the title of your entry in each case. (The "Empty" button will clear down the title field, ready for you to add the next one - but give the first one time to be actioned before doing the next!)

Rules and Information

There are three rules for writing a novel. Unfortunately, no-one knows what they are. Somerset Maugham

Entries are welcome from anywhere in the world, but must be written in English.
Payments must be made in British pounds sterling.
All entries must be the sole work of the entrant, i.e. original and not copied from someone else, even if you’ve changed a couple of words and the title to make it look like it’s your own.
You can enter work that you have entered elsewhere before, whether or not it has won. That’s not a guarantee that you’ll win the prize here – just that we’re very happy to read and judge any work that you have done that fits the remit of the competition. By entering our competition, you are confirming that there is nothing to stop you entering work that has been published/entered/won elsewhere.
We do not claim copyright over any work – it’s yours. However, if you have any kind of contract that would prevent us from being able to publish or award a prize, please don’t enter. We don’t do legal battles.
The word count for short stories is up to 3,000, but there is no lower limit. Flash fiction, micro fiction and/or non-fiction articles will have their own word limit, which will be stated in each competition's details.
The main competitions without a set theme can be on any subject that comes to you for any story you wish to tell. Your job is simply to satisfy the reader and make them want to read your work.
Use of language can be appropriately ‘adult’ where necessary. Scenes and plot can also be in the same vein. As actors always say when asked to appear naked: it’s fine as long as in the right context, done sensitively and well and adds to the story. However, we do not judge pure pornography or extreme violence. Whilst those kinds of things may be fun to read, and probably write, they won’t be judged or win our competition, so please avoid sending them to us. That is not to say we won’t accept tender or rampant love stories, sex scenes, horror themes, science fiction or people unexpectedly taking an axe to their boss. You know your own work. If a sex scene or swear word is vital to the story, then we won’t get our smelling salts out and alert the village hall. However, as we have already mentioned, the story may not make it to the radio broadcast because of those pesky rules they have – but it will not affect your chances of winning a prize.
If there is no set theme, it’s up to you to come up with your best work and send it in. Let your imagination run riot! If there is a theme, then the work must have that as a focus, though we will allow any take on the set theme, whether literal or off on a tangent, as long as it makes sense.
Hopefully, you’ll want to write something new, which is why we give plenty of time to enter, so that if the creativity fairy godmother lands you’ll have time to take ideas and mould them into a story.
Work will be judged anonymously, so please do not put any identifying factors in the body of the story.
Include a top sheet with any entry. It should give your name, the title of the work, the number of words, your snail-mail address, your email address, and any contact numbers, so that we can let you know once the judging is done. If you are using a pseudonym for your work, please let us know to whom a cheque should be payable in case you win!
Work can be submitted either via snail-mail post (remember that this method may take a few days to arrive, and please put the correct postage on, as we will not pay excess postage), or by email. If submitting by email, you should attach the document to the email - either as a Word .doc or .docx file or in Rich Text Format (.rtf) - and copy it into the body of the email as well. You can either complete our entry form and copy/paste it to the front of your work to attach as one document, or send both as separate attachments in the same email. Or you can do your own front sheet with your work, as long as it includes all the relevant information.
We will acknowledge receipt of all entries by email. If you do not receive an acknowledgement and have sent something off then please contact us, because we haven’t received your story! A longlist of entries will be published on the web site as soon as the main judging process is complete. A shortlist and the winning entries will be published shortly afterwards. All entrants will receive notification of the winning entries by the date specified. This will be done via email.
If you require a postal notification, please enclose an SSAE along with your entry.
Please keep a copy of whatever you send us, as we cannot return entries. It sounds simple, but many a Murder She Wrote plot has revolved around someone only having the one copy of the must-have book. And we all know what happened to them!
The judges’ decisions are final.
No individual correspondence will be entered into about competition results.
Privacy: Brighton COW does not release any information about contest entrants to third parties or mailing lists and does not do telephone solicitations. We do reserve the right to use the information you have given us, in whatever format, to contact you by either email or post about how you have done in the competition and to tell you about upcoming opportunities to win. We also reserve the right to contact you regarding any of our other services that you have requested.
Winning or commended entries will be published on our website for a period of three months, but copyright remains with the author. We ask all entrants to confirm that we can, both legally and just to be nice, publish their work on our site.
We may also publish winning and shortlisted entries in an anthology and archive on the web site for others to read in future. We will ask permission of all authors before doing so.
If you do win and agree to be published on our site, we reserve the right to make small alterations to the work in case of typos and wrong use of grammar or spelling, but the work will remain otherwise unchanged.

MadHat Press, an offspring of the non-profit innovative and collaborative arts organization MadHat, Inc., invites submissions of poetry manuscripts for its first chapbook contest. The genre “poetry” is broad and includes prose and conceptual poetry. There are no restrictions regarding form, style, or content.

This inaugural contest will be judged by CAConrad.

CAConrad is the author of The Book of Frank (Wave Books, 2010), Advanced Elvis Course (Soft Skull Press, 2009), Deviant Propulsion (Soft Skull Press, 2006), and a collaboration with Frank Sherlock, The City Real & Imagined (Factory School Press, 2010). He has a new book of poetry forthcoming, A Beautiful Marsupial Afternoon (Wave Books, 2012). He lives in Philadelphia and writes with his friends at PhillySound, and he is a co-founder of PACE: Poet-Activist Community Extension. Look for him at http://CAConrad.blogspot.com

WINNERS

FIRST PRIZE

Textnovel Contest
1. ELIGIBILITY

The Textnovel Contest (the "Contest") is offered by Textnovel, LLC ("Textnovel") and open only to residents of the United States, Canada and those countries where the Contest is allowed by law. By entering the Contest, you accept sole responsibility for determining whether your participation is legal in any jurisdiction that applies to you. You must be at least 13 years old (and if you are not of the age of majority in your jurisdiction of residence, you must have the consent of a parent) and have an active e-mail account and Internet access at the time of entry. By entering, you agree to these "Contest Rules" and that the decisions of Textnovel are final and binding in all respects. Textnovel reserves the right to disallow participation by the residents of any specific country in its sole discretion, either now or upon completion of the Contest, if Textnovel determines in its sole discretion that tax, jurisdictional and other issues make it infeasible or overly difficult to award the prize, calculate witholding taxes, or obtain publication rights from residents of that specific country.
2. DESCRIPTION OF CONTEST AND CONTEST PERIOD

The Contest is for the "best" textnovel story or novel, as determined in the sole discretion of the Textnovel editorial advisory board. Eligible Textnovel stories must be in English and can be submitted and created online, by email or by text from a cell phone, and may include images and/or illustrations. The Contest begins on November 1, 2010 and runs until midnight Mountain Time (U.S.) on August 31st, 2011 (the "Contest Period"). Each participant may submit one Basic Story and an unlimited number of Premium Stories during this period, each of which is deemed an entry. However, in order to qualify for the Contest, each story must have at least 50,000 words by Midnight Mountain Time on August 31st, 2010. To be eligible to win the Contest, your Textnovel account information must include your correct and full name and a valid e-mail address. You must also be in compliance with the Textnovel Terms of Use. If Textnovel determines, in its sole discretion, that your story contains content or images not in compliance, your story will not be eligible for the Contest. No particular format for the story is required for the Contest but authors are encouraged to include breaks between paragraphs and keep sentences and paragraphs reasonably short so that stories are easier to read online or by cell phone.
3. ENTRY

To enter the Contest, you must register as a Textnovel member at www.textnovel.com (the "Site"). You may then enter no more than one Basic Story in the Contest but you may enter an unlimited number of Premium Stories. You can enter your stories from the My Library page (functionality for doing this will be available by November 1, 2010) and this must be done before August 31st, 2011. All submissions are subject to the submission requirements stated in the Terms of Use .
4. WINNER SELECTION

The winner(s) will be selected in the sole and absolute discretion of the Textnovel editorial advisory board, based on a combination of factors, including total views (page views), positive votes and subscriptions by readers and reviews by reviewers, as well as the subjective opinions of the Textnovel editorial advisory board. As part of the selection process, Textnovel may select semi-finalists and finalists and the final winner may come from the semi-finalists, finalists or not, at the discretion of Textnovel. One of the key objectives is to find a novel that can be published and sold successfully in the U.S. market. Textnovel reserves the right to declare a tie between more than one winner, in which case the prize money will be divided equally among the tied contestants.
5. PRIZE

The prize for the Contest is $1,000 cash. The winner(s) will be notified by email and/or text message and/or phone call and must respond and accept the prize by signing and delivering an Affidavit of Eligibility and such additional agency and/or publication agreements as Textnovel or its partners may require within 5 business days of notification. It is currently contemplated that these agreements will either appoint Textnovel as the exclusive literary agent for the winning story for a period of not less than six (6) months or require that the winner grant the sole and exclusive right to publish the print and e-book versions of their story in the United States, Canada and the winner(s) country of residence within a period of 24 months after winning, in exchange for a royalty (specific amount to be determined based on partnership with publishing company and/or based on industry standard rates, in which case the $1,000 advance will be treated as an advance against future royalties or in the case of an agency agreement, as a reimbursable expense, but only reimbursable out of any advance or royalties received by the author from a publishing deal). The winner(s) will be announced on the Textnovel site after they are determined and have signed and delivered the appropriate documentation and been determined to meet all applicable criteria, at which time the prize will be paid as a lump sum. No assignment, transfer or substitution of the prize is permitted. The prize is expressed in U.S. Dollars. Taxes on the prize are the sole responsibility of the winner(s). Note that if your story wins and was created by multiple authors, Textnovel may require that each such author sign an Affidavit of Eligibility and additional agreements.
6. GENERAL CONDITIONS

Textnovel reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual it finds to be tampering with the entry or voting process or the operation of the Contest or the Site; to be in violation of the Terms of Use; to be acting in violation of these Contest Rules; to be acting in an unethical or disruptive manner, or with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any other person, as determined by Textnovel in its sole discretion. Any use of robotic, automatic, macro, programmed or similar voting methods will void all entries by such methods and persons using any such methods will be disqualified. Repeated voting by a member for their own story will void that member's Contest participation. If for any reason this Contest is not capable of being conducted as planned due to infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes which, in the sole opinion textnovel, corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of this Contest, Textnovel reserves the right to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Contest. Textnovel reserves the right to change the Contest Rules prior to August 31st, 2011.

Still: The Journal 2011 Literary Contest
Contest entries should be in keeping with our submission philosophy which states: “Our emphasis is on the literature of the Southern Appalachian region, and we are committed to publishing excellent writing that does not rely on clichés and stereotypes. We want to feature writing that exemplifies the Mountain South or that is written by an author with an established connection to the region.”

Rules:

Submitted entries must be unpublished.

Simultaneous entries are accepted as long as you let us know if your submissions will be published elsewhere before the contest ends.

The contest reading fee is $8 PER ENTRY, payable to Still’s PayPal account, which can be accessed below.

An entry is defined as:

one short story,

or one nonfiction piece,

or one poem.

You may submit multiple submissions in multiple genres, as long as you pay a separate entry fee for each submission. Contest entry fees cannot be refunded under any circumstances.

Manuscripts should be typed in a standard 12-point font (Times New Roman is preferred) and should have numbered pages. Prose must be double spaced. Poetry can be single spaced. Prose entries must not exceed 6,500 words. Poetry entries should not exceed 60 lines.

Make sure that your name or any other identifying information does not appear anywhere on the manuscript(s). All contest entries are processed and read on a “blind” basis.

AWW "Truth to Tell" Non-Fiction Book Competition
We are more interested in a good story well told and a point well made than in attempts to sound literary or poetic. Send us your best, simplest work. Make us love or hate your characters, believe or disbelieve your thesis, by your excellent prose composition. Get us involved in the narrative, or interested in the facts, by moving us skillfully from point A to point B.

AWW is a resource for creative women. We want to encourage work by, for and about women, but stories about men will not be overlooked. Just be sure that your viewpoint rings true and the experiences you portray are authentic to the character and setting. Be natural.

Do not use special script for emphasis. Read rules for the use of italics and do not use italics for simple emphasis. Do not overuse the exclamation point. Books will be judged on objective standards and demerits will be assigned for: word repetition, incorrect grammar and syntax, incorrect punctuation, improper formatting of paragraphs, weak characterizations, contradictory or illogical plot development, unbelievable or inconsistent setting. It will also be judged subjectively by our editors, as nearly as possible to mimic the experience of a new enthusiastic reader who has picked your book off the shelf and is embarking on the adventure of involvement in the world you have created. What stops, bores, or confuses that reader/editor will stop, bore, and confuse a larger audience.

Read the instructions carefully and submit accordingly. Inattention to detail can result in disqualification. The editors of AWW are themselves contest entrants (and occasional winners) and are well acquainted with the frustrations of getting it wrong and kicking oneself for having gotten it wrong. Please, read. For questions, email us.

Important: Contestants should be 18 or older. Submitting your entry certifies that you are eligible, and that all work submitted is your own. Entry fees are non-refundable and are payable only through PayPal. Judge's decisions are final.

Instructions for submissions to the AWW Book Competition:

1. Entry fee is $40.00 for all submissions and includes a thorough, thoughtful critique with up to ten pages of line editing comments and corrections. You will be given an opinion and suggestions about character and plot development/ logic and rationale.
You then have the option to resubmit the entire book, having applied changes based on our comments and suggestions. This resubmission will be accompanied by a $20 reading fee and represents your final entry into the competition.

Entries submitted initially for critique will be judged if not resubmitted. Resubmissions will be judged as the final entry in place of the original entry, with no exceptions. Payments must be made via PayPal (specify on your payment if the entry is fiction (Good Read) or non-fiction (Truth to Tell).

2.YOU MUST SUBMIT ONLY THE FIRST 75 PAGES OF YOUR BOOK. You must also send a detailed, chapter-by-chapter plot synopsis for the entire book; the synopsis can be up to two single-spaced pages.

3. You must email your work to the editor as a Microsoft Word document (the file extension should be .doc), font size 12 points, Times New Roman, 1.5 line spacing. (Send emails to awomanswrite (a) yahoo.com)

4. All work must have the author's last name at the top left and page numbers on the top right of every page.

5. All work must be accompanied by a one-page cover letter that includes the statement: "I understand and agree to comply with all contest rules and instructions." The letter must also include a brief biography of the author. (The cover letter and chapter-by-chapter synopsis may be separate document files, but the first 75 pages of the book must be submitted in a single document file.)

6. All submissions should include the author's full name, mailing address, phone number, email address, title of work, and total word count. We will use the email address provided to notify entrants of any extensions or changes and to contact winners at the end of the contest. Please be sure to notify us of any changes in your contact information.

7. Do NOT include a table of contents for the Good Read competition. DO include a Table of Contents for the Truth to Tell competition.

8. Do not include illustrations.

9. Do not use special fonts.

10. Absolutely no pornography or any material that is intentionally degrading to any group will be accepted. Keep four-letter words to a minimum -- our staff is easily embarrassed.

11. Denote a break in action with an extra line break. Do not use lines, asterisks or other special marks.

12. Denote a chapter ending by skipping to the next page and beginning the new chapter at the top of that page.

13. A book, for purposes of this competition, should be at least 150 pages long, or at least 60,000 words.

14. Entries to the Good Read competition must be sent no later than November 30 annually.

15. Entries to the Truth to Tell competition must be sent no later than August 31 annually.

16. Critiques will be sent by email within one month of receipt of work.

17. Prize winner will be informed no later than 45 days from the closing date of the competition.

18. If an entry is considered in the final judging process, you may be asked to submit the complete novel electronically. Judges will advise you if this is the case. (Failure to submit the complete book on request within one week is grounds for disqualification.)

Glimmer Train Short Story Award
We are interested in reading your original, unpublished stories!

We don't publish stories for children, I'm sorry.
Multiple submissions are fine. You can send more than one submission per competition, if you like, or submit the same story for different categories, if it qualifies.
When we accept a story for publication, we are purchasing first-publication rights. (Once we've published your story, you are free to, for instance, include it in your own collection.)

To make a submission: Please send your work via our new online submission procedure.
It's easy, will save you postage and paper, and is much easier on the environment.
Just click the yellow Submissions button above to get started!

Dates:
The category will be open to submissions for one full month, from the first day through
midnight (Pacific time) of the last day of the month. Results will be posted at www.glimmertrain.org

February. Results will be posted on April 30.
May. Results will be posted on July 31.
August. Results will be posted on October 30.
November. Results will be posted on January 31.

Reading fee:

$15 per story.

Prizes:

1st place wins $1,200, publication in Glimmer Train Stories, and 20 copies of that issue.
2nd-place: $500
3rd-place:$300

Other considerations:

Open only to writers whose fiction has not been presented in a print publication with a circulation over 5,000. (Entries, of course, must be unpublished.)
Most submissions to this category run 1,500 to 6,000 words, but can go up to 12,000 words.

I suspect that more than a few editors fail to read beyond the first paragraph of stories sent them by unknown writers. Not so with the editors of Glimmer Train--they seek out new voices in fiction and provide them with valuable exposure. Shortly after my work appeared in Glimmer Train, a collection of my short stories was accepted for publication.

PAWS National Writing Competition for Children
Calling all budding writers- Years 5-11

Write a short story about a wild animal and you could see it in print!

We're looking for fictional stories between 500 and 1500 words about wild animals and the winning stories will be published in a special book to raise money for The Born Free Foundation!

The competition is now open and you have until midnight August 31st 2011 to submit your stories to us! All entries will be online using the form provided.

There are three 'school year' age catergories- Years 5 and 6, Years 7 and 8 and Years 9- 11 and we will choose the best 10 stories from each Year group- this is the year you're in before September 2011- so the one you're in now! If you're not from the UK check out the school year ages to work out which group you belong to!

Years 5 and 6 (usually 9 - 11)
Years 7 and 8 (usually 11-13)
Years 9,10,11 (usually 13-16)

We are using the school years rather than ages so do make sure you're in the right one!

We have three special judges- actress and founder of The Born Free Foundation- Virginia McKenna OBE, winner of the Blue Peter Book of the Year Award 2011, children's writer Lauren St. John and winner of the Blue Peter Book of the Year Award 2000, children's writer Alan Gibbons.

‘Most of us like reading stories about animals. But writing stories about them? That is really exciting and special. There are so many animals to choose from, so many opportunities to use your imagination – to intrigue us, make us smile and, perhaps, make us sad. Whatever story you tell I am really looking forward to reading it’.
Virginia McKenna

You will need to get permission from your parent or guardian (over 18) to enter. It's free to enter but parents will have the option to donate to Born Free when you enter if they want to!

Look at the Guidelines and the Tips & Tricks to help you write a fabulous story!

Remember we only want stories about wild animals- not pets or zoo animals! Born Free think all animals belong in the wild and that's what these stories will be about!

The competition is free to enter and you can enter as many times as you like- you will be directed to a JustGiving page when you've entered for Mums and Dads if you would like to give a donation to Born Free... but it's optional!

Guidelines

We want you to think very carefully about the wild animal you choose- it can be anything from a shellfish to an elephant and yes we do include insects and birds as well.

We want your story to be at least 500 words but no longer than 1500 words and we would like you to type it so you can submit it online.

It has to be a story which means something has to happen, the animal will have a problem or conflict to overcome. You can include other animals or people in the story if you wish.

Can you intrigue us? Surprise us? Teach us something? Make us laugh? Make us smile? Even make us cry?

What are you trying to say? Have you a message in your story about that animal- will the person that reads it think about it after? That’s what good stories do- they intrigue, excite but most of all, whether happy or sad, they should entertain us and make us feel differently.

Look at the Tips & Tricks page with gives more detail about how to write a short story.

Leap Local's Travel Story Competition
Travel Story Guidelines 2011 Print E-mail

Description of Leap Local Travel Writing Competition (Stories accepted now until Midnight August 31, 2011):

Leap Local will be awarding a $500 USD first prize and two $150 USD second prizes to travellers with hilarious, surprising, culture shocking, passionate, and life changing local travel stories. When we say local, we mean a travel experience which engaged with local individuals and culture unique to the travel location. The story could also be an “ooops” story - an “I was a stupid tourist” story, about a time you were physically lost, or lost in translation, and now realize that you should have employed a local expert, or guide, for that journey.

The three winning stories will also be published in the Leap Local Newsletter which is sent to travellers around the world, and will be displayed on the website. The top ten stories will all be published on the Leap Local website (read below guidelines for more details). Should the quality of stories be as high as it was in 2010. The top 25 stories will be featured in Monday Escape.
The competition is open to anyone over the age of 18. Only one entry accepted per person.
Prizes will be awarded in preferred currency of winners if possible.

Guidelines for Leap Local Travel Writer Competition:

(All entries must made by 12:00 midnight (in your time zone) August 31, 2011. No late entries will be accepted.)

1. Write a 500-650 word story or article about your local travel experience. Please only submit stories about something that happened to you personally. Submit your story in a Word attachment to Kirsten@leaplocal.org using 12 pt font-size preferably Calibri or Arial, single spaced with double space between paragraphs, no indentations, no fancy formatting, please. Indicate in the subject of your email: Leap Local Travel Writing Entry.

Below your story provide a few details for other tourists regarding getting to the location, dining, places to stay, transportation, links, or any insider knowledge that will help your fellow traveller. This information is not included in story word-count.

2. All competitors must post a recommendation or rating (http://www.leaplocal.org/recommend.html) about a local guide or service on the Leap Local website. Provide the name of the local you have reviewed and link to your review when you submit your story. (*Please note your website recommendation or review of the local on the Leap Local website does not have to be connected to the experience that you are writing about for the travel writing competition. Some writers might be writing about a travel incident from years ago and thus do not have up to date information about guides or services in the location of their story. We encourage you then to review a guide or service from your own back yard – something that tourist visiting your home locale might find of interest.) While the reviews are not judged, the quality of review will be taken into consideration. The local that you recommend/rate will automatically be entered into the other competition, the guides and services competition, so your recommendation matters to them.

3. Entrants need to provide their real names, contact details including country of residence, and email addresses.[1]

4. You will receive an email saying that your story was received within one week of submitting. Please do not contact Leap Local to ask about the status of your story. If you have not received an email confirming that your work was received, please contact Kirsten indicating this, and you will be asked to re-submit your story to an alternate email address.

5. The competition will be judged by a group of professional international writers, authors and industry experts. The judging decision will be final. Judges will be announced before competition closure. Please do not contact them.

6. Your story must not have been published anywhere before previously, including online on websites or blogs. Leap Local has the exclusive right to first publication, and non-exclusive right to distribute and syndicate the stories whether in print, in any media, electronic, online, or any other medium, on any website and in any database, archive or library, on or offline. Authors of competition stories will be credited for their work.

Once the winners have been announced, all other competition participants are free to use their stories elsewhere.

The Luke Bitmead Bursary for New Writers
We are excited to announce the opening of entries for the 2011 Luke Bitmead Writer’s Bursary. The award was set up shortly after Luke’s death in 2006 by his family to support and encourage the work of fledgling novel writers. The top prize is a publishing contract with Legend Press, as well as a cash bursary.

Luke is the author of the brilliant White Summer (the first novel to be published by Legend Press) and co-author of Heading South. Information about Luke can be found at www.lukebitmead.com.

We are delighted to be working with Luke's family to ensure that Luke’s name and memory lives on - not only through his work, but through this wonderful memorial bursary too. For those of you lucky enough to have met Luke you will know that he was hugely compassionate and would love the idea of another struggling talented writer being supported on the arduous road to securing their first publishing deal.

We will ensure that, as with all our authors, we give the winner of the bursary as much support as we can, and offer them the most effective creative platform from which to showcase their talent. We can’t wait to start reading and judging the submissions.

We are pleased to be continuing this brilliant bursary for a fourth year, and hope to follow in the success of our previous winners Andrew Blackman (On the Holloway Road, published February 2009), Ruth Dugdall (The Woman Before Me, August 2010) and last year’s winner Sophie Duffy, whose debut novel The Generation Game is published on 1st August 2011.

Submissions from writers will be accepted from 13th May until 31st August 2011.

Only adult fiction is eligible for this bursary, no children's books or non-fiction. The judging panel will consist of Luke’s family, Legend Press – with the full panel announced shortly.

Novels must be already completed before entry. Unfinished manuscripts will not be accepted. Your entry should be sent by email and include the following:

1) The first 3-4 chapters of your novel
2) A synopsis (max 1 page)
3) A personal statement outlining why you would particularly benefit from the bursary and some information about yourself and your writing (1 page approx)

Submissions should be sent to: bitmeadbursary@legendpress.co.uk

Entrants must be aged 16 or over. There is no upper age restriction for entry but all submissions must be from first-time, non-published authors – particularly those who are talented but whose personal or financial circumstances are making it especially hard for them to focus on writing as a career.

The 2010 bursary was inundated with entries and we look forward to reading your work and discovering more talented authors, to join our fantastic alumni!

For all enquiries please email bitmeadbursary@legendpress.co.uk

Background:

Luke was just 34 when he died and was considered by all that had read his work as one of the UK’s most talented up-and-coming writers. His first published novel was the cult comedy White Summer – published by Legend Press in May 2006, just five months before he died. Legend Press, in agreement with Luke’s family, also published the comedy romance novel Heading South which Luke had written with co-author Catherine Richards. The heartfelt dedication in Heading South reads: ‘In memory of Luke, who’s talent, wit, drive and smile will be greatly missed but always remembered by everyone who met him.’

Legend Press and Luke’s family are keen to ensure that the immensely talented young writer gains the recognition for his work that he was due to receive, while at the same time ensuring that his memory helps other writers. Royalties from the sale of both novels, and any other future novels of Luke’s which might be published, will support the Luke Bitmead Memorial Fund and future bursaries

Luke’s mother, Elaine Hanson, who set up the memorial fund and bursary scheme along with her daughter (Luke’s sister Tiffany) and her husband (Luke’s step-father Chris) said: “The life of a writer can be both lonely and a financial struggle. This bursary honours Luke’s idea to assist fledgling writers through what can be a bleak time before a novel is flying off the shelves and generating sufficient royalties to provide a proper income. Legend Press has been a huge support since Luke’s death and it is fantastic to see so many authors benefitting from Luke's Bursary."

Winners, runners up and honorary mentions will have their stories published on our website and on our forthcoming mobile phone application, which is due to launch in September. The winner will also receive a copy of the book The World’s Greatest Short Stories, edited by James Daley.
