The Second Annual Victor Villasenor First Sentence Contest

Your first sentence is your first invitation to a total stranger to get to know you, and know your book.

No one is more keenly aware of this than our neighbor here in Oceanside, best selling and internationally acclaimed author Victor Villasenor.

About a year ago, Victor was kind enough to address our writing group (http://www.meetup.com/AntiSocialWriters/about/), and among other topics he emphasized the importance of The First Sentence. The discussion inspired member Zara Altair, herself a professional screenplay writer(https://profiles.google.com/zaltair/about) to suggest a contest, in which each participant wrote ONLY the first sentence to their unpublished or published novel.

The body of Victor’s work has helped shape the world into a better place, and has especially been helpful to America, as it lifts itself from the mire of its racist history. Rain of Gold, the story of Victor’s family settling in Oceanside after the Mexican Revolution, offers dignity and a voice to Latino Americans, and by extension to all of us.

Victor’s annual Snow-goose Thanksgiving has planted a seed in our consciousness that the world dominated by men is under transformation, and we are approaching harmony and balance as women pull us out of the ditch. HERE ARE THE RULES:

Send us as a separate word attachment (NOT in the body of an email!) the first sentence to your novel or short story. The contest will be judged solely on this sentence.

Skip a few lines, and then give us your first paragraph.

By submitting your work, you are giving us a one-time right to publish it on line. Your entry must include your email address on the attachment so that we can keep track of entries. Entries must be received by June 15th, midnight California time. Send them to thorn@awordwithyoupress.com

You may have three submissions, and your novel need not be completed in order to send in your first line. If you would like to include a few words about yourself, and a link to your own website, please include that in your submission. We also ask that you help this contest succeed by commenting on the work of other writers, and please, broadcast this contest through your Facebook, twitter, and all manner of social media. You might even talk about it face to face with someone!
