NCLA Water Poetry Competition
The NCLA ‘Water’ Poetry Competition is organised by the Newcastle Centre for the Literary Arts (NCLA) and run in association with the Newcastle University Societal Challenge programme on sustainability and Northumbrian Water. The Main category is open to all UK residents. The North East Young Adult category is open to residents of the North East of England who are no more than 19 years old on 13/01/2012. The entry fee is £5 for up to three poems of no more than 40 lines each. Refunds will not be given for invalid entries. Cheques should be made payable to Newcastle University. You may also pay online via the webstore. Residents of the North East of England aged no more than 19 years old on 13/01/2012 may enter up to three poems of no more than 40 lines each for free. All entries must be in written in English, typed in black ink on white A4 paper, and must address an aspect of the competition theme of ‘water’. Poems must not exceed 40 lines (excluding the title). Entries must be the entrant’s own original work, must not have been previously published or self-published, in print, online (on any website) or broadcast. Entries must show no name, address or identifying marks other than the title and line count, and posted to NCLA, School of English, Newcastle University, NE1 7RU, and marked ‘NCLA Water Poetry Competition’. Entries must be accompanied by a covering letter containing the entrant’s full name, the titles of each poem submitted, and contact details including postcode and email address. No corrections can be made after receipt of entries. Entries will not be returned or acknowledged. The deadline for submission of entries is 13 January 2012. The decisions of the judging panel are final and binding, and no correspondence will be entered into about the results. Shortlisted entrants will be notified in early February 2012. Shortlisted entrants will be invited to the award ceremony in the evening of Thursday 23rd February, 2012. The top three entries to the main competition will be rewarded with cash prizes: 1st prize: £500, 2nd prize: £200, 3rd prize: £100. The winner of the North East Young Adult category will be rewarded with a cash prize of £250 and five runners up will each receive a cash prize of £50. NCLA and Northumbrian Water reserve the right to publish and display winning and shortlisted entries in a variety of media, both in print, online, and by other means, including both the NCLA and Northumbrian Water websites and publicity material. NCLA reserves the right to edit the shortlisted entries in consultation with their authors. Entries must not infringe any copyright or contain defamatory or otherwise unlawful matter. Each winner agrees to the use of his/her name and photograph for publicity purposes by NCLA and Northumbrian Water. Entry implies acceptance of all the rules. Failure to comply with the entry requirements will result in disqualification. All enquiries about the competition should be directed to ncenla@ncl.ac.uk. The NCLA reserves the right to amend these Rules where it is deemed necessary to do so or where circumstances are beyond NCLA's control. Any changes to these Rules will be posted on the NCLA website.

Hurston/Wright Award for College Writers
The Hurston/Wright Award for College Writersâ„¢ has been established by novelist Marita Golden to honor excellence in fiction writing by students of African descent enrolled full time as an undergraduate or graduate student in any college or university in the United States.
The winners will be announced in April for the writers of the best previously unpublished short story or novel excerpt.
Eligibility: At the time of submission, applicants must be enrolled in a college or university full time as an undergraduate or graduate student. Writers who have published a book in any genre are ineligible. Winners will be selected from the best previously unpublished short story or novel excerpt.
How to Apply:
• Email your double-spaced manuscript, of no more than 15 pages (of a novel) or 20 – 25 pages (of a short story) typed in a 12pt. font, along with a cover page to info@hurstonwright.org. Cover page should include: ◦ Your first and last name ◦ Address ◦ Phone Number (day and evening) ◦ Email Address ◦ Indicate whether you are submitting a Novel Excerpt or Short Story
• Do not include your name on any of the manuscript pages. • Only one story may be submitted per applicant. • Submissions must be received by January 13, 2012. • Include with your submission a $10 nonrefundable submission fee.
Deadline:
Submissions must be received between November 7, 2011 and January 13, 2012. The nominated winner and finalists will be required to provide a verification of college enrollment and a photo. Previous winners are not eligible.
