Entries can be based around any subject of the author’s choice & will be judged by prize-winning poet and short story writer Andy Humphrey. Adult Open Competition There are two ADULT categories (age 16 or over on the closing date, 24th September 2011): 1. Poetry; maximum length 40 lines. 2. Short Story; maximum length 2,000 words. Prizes in each category: £100 first prize, £50 second prize, £25 third prize. Entries must be submitted by post to The Competition Administrator, Malton Literature Festival, Rise Cottage, Broughton Road, Malton, North Yorkshire, YO17 7BP to arrive by the competition closing date of 24th September 2011. Email entries will not be accepted. ENTRY FEES: Poetry = £4 each (£10 for 4 poems). Short Story = £4 each (£10 for 3 stories). There is no limit to the number of entries you can submit but each entry must be accompanied by the correct entry fee. Cheques (in Sterling) must be made payable to We Love Malton. Cash in Sterling may be sent at the sender's own risk. Entries will be judged anonymously so please DO NOT put your name on your entry. Your name should only appear on the entry form along with the titles of your entries. Entries must be typed or printed in English on A4 paper. POEMS should be single spaced. SHORT STORIES should be double spaced, page numbered and with the story’s title on each page; the word count should be printed at the end of the story. No drawings, photographs or clip art will be allowed. Be sure to use the correct postage. Incorrectly posted items will not be accepted. All entries must be entirely the competitor’s own work. Entries must not have been previously published, broadcast or have won a prize in any other UK competition. N.B. if your entry has appeared on the Internet (unless in a subscribers’ closed forum) it counts as previously published and CANNOT be accepted. Entries may not be submitted for consideration in any other competition, publication or broadcast medium whilst under consideration for this competition. Writers retain copyright and may submit entries to other outlets after 23rd October. A list of prize winners and the judge’s report for the competition can be obtained by enclosing a self-addressed envelope marked “RESULTS” with your entry. Entries will not be returned, so please keep a copy. The judge’s decision is final. No correspondence will be entered into. The organisers reserve the right to alter the prize fund or hold entries over until the next competition if there are insufficient entries. Young Writers’ Competitions There are two YOUNG WRITERS categories: 1. Poetry; maximum length 30 lines. 2. Short Story; maximum length 1,000 words. The competition is open to young writers who are about to enter Years 7-11 in September 2011. Entries will be judged anonymously so please DO NOT put your name on your entry. Your name should only appear on your entry form along with the titles of your entries. Entries must be typed or printed in English on A4 paper. Entry forms MUST be countersigned by a parent, guardian or teacher to confirm that the entry is the young writer’s own unassisted work. No drawings, photographs or clip art will be allowed. Entries must not have been previously published, broadcast or have won a prize in any other UK competition. Please note that if your entry has appeared on the Internet (unless in a subscribers’ closed forum) it counts as previously published and cannot be accepted. Entries may not be submitted to any other competition or publication whilst under consideration for this competition. Copyright for all work remains with the writers. Entries may be submitted to other competitions or publications after 23rd October. Entries will not be returned, so please keep a copy. The judge’s decision is final.
